Writers such as Olivia Wilde and Bo Burnham took audiences outside their comfort zones, capturing the cringe most viewers felt during their younger years as well as moments of greatness that deserve more acknowledgment than they have previously been allotted. With the advent of streaming, a wide variety of voices previously silenced have been platformed and the writers behind those voices took the chance to amplify them, creating some of the most exciting and impactful films of the 2010s. The frightening nature of puberty, the bad faith criticism from one or many adults, and the inclination towards self-sabotage and stubbornness, have all been discussed heavily and with an earnestness that translates beyond the screen. To a generation often chastised and parodied, sincere projects about teens have enabled a rise in consciousness about issues that adolescents endure. Those seemingly small moments: a soundtrack single, a concise yet quote, or an otherwise insignificant object, speak to the power of a strong teen comedy. Would it be unreasonable to assume that the three words, "Come on Eileen", wouldn't evoke sentimental feelings about Charlie, his eventful first-year student year with Sam and Patrick, and the inevitable path to recovery he embarks on during the film's conclusion. Like a time capsule, revisiting these films conjure up memories of joy and warmth. In spite of their less savory creative decision, the teen comedies that have been canonized both successfully capture the zeitgeist of their respective periods while preserving universal themes. Films such as Mean Girls and Heathers use a combination of incredible comedic timing and intriguing examination of femininity and its complexities to attract their audiences who have in turned, carried the legacy of both films beyond their respective years of release.
